Caravaggio, the original bad boy

One of the featured artists of the late Rennaisance is Caravaggio. His paintings, which are created with lifelike accuracy, play with shadows and light to tell stories within stories. He was an unpredictable and stormy personality who shocked the church (often his sponsor) by using street prostitutes as his models for Mary. He was legendary for his temper and unbrideled passions for sex, drinking, and other scandalous things. He died of heatstroke and was buried in a paupers grave at 38. So brilliant painter but not so good with practicalities.... you know, like drinking water. Here is more on the man and his art. http://www.reidsitaly.com/destinations/lazio/rome/sights/caravaggio_tour.html His Calling of St. Matthew catapulted him to fame. We'll see this on our first day in Rome. It is very close to our hotel and also Linda's favorite painting.
